Obtaining an Alien ID Card in Kenya

An Alien in Kenya is defined under our Kenyan laws as anyone who is not a Citizen of the Republic of Kenya. It is provided that any person who is in Kenya for a period exceeding ninety (90) days should be registered, this includes visitors who will be staying for more than ninety (90) days, work permit holders’ residents, dependants who are residents, permanent residents and students.
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION OF AN ALIEN ID CARD IN KENYA
To apply for an Alien ID Card, a resident person must first have a valid permit or pass. In addition to this the other requirements are:
1. A duly filled, signed and stamped form 50, which should be printed and presented at the immigration offices.
2. A copy of a valid passport to establish one’s nationality and identity.
3. Two (2) recent passport size photographs with a clear white background on them.
RENEWAL OR LOSS OF ALIEN ID CARD IN KENYA
For renewal purposes, one should produce the previous Alien ID Card and for loss of Alien ID Card, proof of loss of the same should be produced, a police abstract should suffice in this case.
PROCEDURE
The application form should be filled online in the EFNS platform. Once done, all the above documentation should be presented at the immigration offices at Nyayo house where they will be received, verified and approved, if qualified. Once approved, finger prints and a photograph are then taken for the Alien ID Card/ Foreigner Nationals Certificate.
VALIDITY
The Validity of an Alien ID Card is two (2) years, but can be renewed for further periods of two (2) years.
For permanent residence, the Alien ID Card is issued for a period of three (3) years.
PERSONS WHO ARE EXEMPTED FROM APPLYING FOR AN ALIEN ID CARD
There are persons who are however exempted from having an Alien ID Card and these are:
• Serving member of the armed forces
• A public officer and the spouse and children
• A person exempted from the provisions of the Act under section 34(3) of the Act
• A refugee registered under the refugee Act 2006
• A person who resides in Kenya for a continuous period not exceeding three months and is in possession of valid visitors or other authority under the Act for instance, a special pass.
TIMELINE FOR PROCESSING THE APPLICATION
